When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity a real marketplace buying question, how often is Prometora part of the answer? We measure it every Monday with an open-source tracker and publish the numbers here - including the weeks that hurt.

A poll, not a census
Nobody can see what people actually ask ChatGPT. Not us, not the $90-a-month tools, nobody - those conversations are private. The next best thing is a poll: write the questions our customers would ask, put them to the engines the same way every week, and measure what comes back. That works, as long as you respect three limits:
- We wrote the questions. This samples the questions we chose, not real conversations. Representative, never exhaustive.
- Mentioned is not cited. A mention means the answer names us; a citation means our site is in the sources the answer was built from. You can have either without the other, and each gap calls for different work.
- APIs, not the apps. We query the official APIs with web search enabled - same engines, same grounding, but a proxy for ChatGPT-dot-com, not a screenshot of it.
And answers vary run to run. That is why every number here is X out of N, and the unit of truth is the weekly trend - never a single answer.
How we measure it
1. A prompt bank. Twelve buying questions written the way a real founder would ask them - best marketplace platform, best Sharetribe alternative, best platform for a rental marketplace, and so on. Four examples are shown below; the full bank stays private, because the question list itself is competitive information.
2. Four engines, through the front door. Each question goes to the official OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity APIs with web search or grounding enabled. Real web-grounded answers, no scraping.
3. Two scores per answer. Did the answer mention Prometora by name? And was prometora.com among the sources it cited? You can be cited without being named, and named without being cited - each gap points at different work.
4. Repetition. Every question is asked three times per engine, every week. One answer is a coin flip; the trend is the signal.
The whole thing runs as a scheduled GitHub Action and commits its results to git, which means the history is tamper-evident: our bad early numbers are permanently on record, and so is whatever happens next. This is not a Prometora product feature - it is the same open-source tracker anyone can fork and point at their own site , pointed at ourselves.
The trend: are we climbing?
The same trend by engine (mentions / answers sampled). Engines were added as API keys were configured, so early sessions cover fewer engines.

The finding that changed our content plan
In the latest session, every single citation of Prometora came from our own website. Not one third-party page brought us into an answer. The engines clearly read and trust prometora.com - we get cited more often than we get named - but they only volunteer a brand when other sites talk about it too. Your own site gets you cited once you are already in the conversation; it is other people's sites that get you named.

Methodology in full: each of 12 buying questions is asked 3 times per engine per weekly session via the official APIs with web search or grounding enabled (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Perplexity). Failed API calls are excluded from denominators. Results are committed to git per session and are immutable once recorded. Engine models change over time and trend breaks are annotated in the underlying data. This page reads the same data files and updates automatically after each weekly run.
